Morning Sessions
The rapid growth of the aging population is associated with an increased prevalence of progressive dementias. The challenges of caring for patients with cognitive disorders are often further complicated by an overlay of depression, delirium, chronic disease, and/or other geriatric syndromes. Dr. Brenda Bergman-Evans will discuss methods for developing and implementing a comprehensive plan of care to effectively meet the needs of individuals, families and caregivers dealing with dementia and aging.
Afternoon Sessions
It can be difficult to predict mortality in patients with dementia. This is compounded by the fact that good hospice care can stabilize patients with dementia. Dr. Heather Morgan will discuss the Medicare guidelines for hospice admission for patients with the diagnosis of dementia and discuss the documentation needed to maintain hospice certification. Dr. Morgan will use a case model to further discuss Lewy Body dementia and discuss how to treat agitation and delirium in patients with Parkinson related dementia.
Dr. Morgan will also discuss how to navigate personality disorders in hospice care, as approximately 10 to 13 percent of the general population has a personality disorder.
Objectives
At the completion of this workshop, participants will be able to:
- Discuss dementia including pertinent pathophysiology and symptoms.
- Compare and contrast delirium, dementia and depression.
- Review impact of dementia on family caregivers.
- Identify effective pharmacological and nonpharmacological interventions for persons with dementia, delirium and depression.
- Describe measures to identify and address the relationship between dementia and selected “giants of geriatrics” syndromes affecting quality of life and function.
- Discuss Medicare guidelines for hospice admission for patients with the diagnosis of dementia.
- Discuss documentation needed to maintain hospice certification in patients with dementia.
- Define Lewy Body dementia and how it is different from other types of dementia using a case model.
- Identify how to treat agitation and delirium in patients with Parkinson related dementia.
- Determine how to navigate personality disorders in hospice care.
